TEMPLES  OF  TAMIL NADU

THANJAVUR- RAJARAJESVARAM

Sundara Chola Parantakan belonged to the fourth generation after Vijayalaya. Of  his  Three children, the eldest son was assasinated. The second, Kundavai was a girl and hence a boy the third child, Arumoli was next in the line of  succession. This Arumoli rose up as RAJA RAJA I  and laid the actual foundation  for the  glory and longevity of the chola empire. He was a great soldier and an able administrator and had the fortune of being followed by a line successors equally adept in the art of war and administration. The Cholas were the greatest temple builders  India has ever known and during the period of  Raja  Raja I  their  achievements in this field attained unprecedented heights.

At the top of the Sri Vimana near the neck of the gopuram there are 8 Nandhis seen very prominently even while standing from the ground. These Nandhis are huge and carved from single stone. A Nandhi of the similar scale is seen on the southern Prahara. One can judge the size of the Nandhi and its relative weight.
